What a crazy semester! Sometimes, during midterms prep, you just need the bare necessities to get through the week -- coffee, hastily scribbled notes, and good friends to put your heads together and create the ultimate study think tank.
We have been all over the place, learning the influence social media has on our lives. Let me share with you some things I've learned from COMM 373!
- Social media has changed drastically since Facebook "did it" in 2004.
- Our book defined social media as a group of internet-based applications that build on the ideological technological foundations of Web 2.0, allowing for the creation and exchange of user-generated content.
- Social media has so many unwritten rules of etiquette that may or may not be different from the etiquette of in-person interaction.
- There are seven deadly sins of social media usage: misappropriation, abandonment, manipulation, ignorance, monotony, narcissism, and uniformity.
- Impression management plays a key role in our online spaces. The anonymity factor of social media (or potential for anonymity) allows for a much easier process to craft a personal brand.
- A personal brand is the collection and strategic process of sustaining a specific image in hopes of establishing a clear advantage in audiences on and offline.
- To create an effective personal brand that generally matches with who you are as a person, you should do four things as are prudent to the situation.
- Be clear.
- Be consistent.
- Be transparent.
- Be authentic.
- The creators of the various social media platforms have fine-tuned the platforms and algorithms in such a way that they fit our needs and wants almost immediately.
- "Reels"/infinite scrolling
- Fun filters
- Messaging apps
