This week's COMM 373 prompt was to choose my own adventure. Wow, is that broad! Oddly enough, this week's prompt coincides really well with what we are working on in another class I'm taking: COMM 498 - Senior Seminar. In this class, we have been going through figuring out what we want to do with our lives.
Something Dr. Kennedy has really stressed is that some people take unconventional paths. And that's okay. We have been discussing something referred to as the "Assembly Line" for the last couple of weeks. This is essentially the cut-and-dry pathway to the career goal you have for yourself. Sometimes, this can be very fulfilling and it's exactly what you want to do. Other times, it leaves you feeling burnt out. The main point of what we have talked about is that at the end of the day, what you do should yes, pay the bills, but it should also leave you feeling fulfilled.
Literally, in my senior seminar class, we are challenged to choose our own adventure and figure out some steps to get there. It's a jungle out there! So many options, so many doors thrown open with possibility! Where do I even start? It's freeing to know that there are many roads to reach joy and fulfillment, but it's also kind of terrifying.
As a senior, I have a whole wilderness of avenues to explore. As a communication major, I could certainly go on the assembly line and do public relations or HR I'm pretty certain that I could be relatively happy in that field. But I don't know if another job would bring me the fulfillment I would want.
But as Russel says from Pixar's "Up", "The wilderness must be explored!" Here's to taking the leap and learning to trust the process.
