Introducing the New Logo!

 Welcome back, friends.

This week's COMM 373 challenge was to create our own logo. So here it is! Innit lovely?

Allow me to describe the creative process to you. I have the free version of Canva for my own personal use, but I have access to a professional version for Mount Students for Life (MS4L). The professional version of Canva is absolutely amazing. Some features not included in the free version include an automatic resize button, incredibly cooler graphics, and nice templates. That said, the MS4L login credentials are not my own. None of the other students use it for their classes, so neither should I.

Now, about the logo itself. I wanted to do some kind of film reel, but I couldn't find anything free that was visually appealing AND would allow me to incorporate the name of my blog. But then I realized that I don't watch movies to review them. I watch them to enjoy them, so I might as well bust out the popcorn! I played with angles to see if I could wrap "The Weird Homeschooler" around the bag of popcorn, but alas, it was not to be. So I settled for the fun Courier New typewriter font, positioned it straight, and voilá! I had my labeled popcorn bag.

As to the color, I know the teal green does clash a little with the bright red stripes. However, I wanted the background of my logo to match the theme of my blog. I played around with some purples, but I thought the purple and red were too close. So I went with the greenish blue.

We will return to movie-related social media analyses next week!

✨OTAY✨ (kallmekris)

This week, we are going to take a break from movie quotes and characters and focus in on reviewing a social media influencer. Kris Collins (known on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram by her handle "@kallmekris") is a 25-year-old TikTok star and influencer. She also is a hairdresser, fashion blogger, and YouTuber, according to newsunzip.com. Kris rose to fame for her comedy TikTok sketches featuring characters like five-year-old Riley and her mother from Boston, Janet. She has developed a lot of costumes and voices for each of the characters, and she films and produces these all herself.  Here is a video introducing some of her characters! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n36KHNP2Ko Most of Kris's content is in TikTok, but she will often upload her featured content on YouTube as a #Short video or on Instagram as a Reel. Her Instagram posts features photos of her outfits and makeup. On YouTube, she often does random challenges (whether from fan suggestions or sheer boredom). S...

Even though you can't see us, we're always watching. (Angels in the Outfield)

Image courtesy of PublicDomainPictures.net  Last week, I talked about my minimal sharing on social media and impression management. What I didn't really talk about was why I am so minimal with what I share. It's because I value my privacy, and everything is open to ridicule on social media, no matter how locked down your profile may be. It can be about any topic: politics, mental health, neurological disorders, childhood nostalgia . . . the list just continues. No matter what you post about, there will be someone who takes issue with it. Public shaming online is not limited to just your friends. It's so easy to take a screenshot of a supposedly private post, snap, or tweet and share it to a public account. I don't share very much because I don't have the time, energy, or desire to deal with nitpicky Internet trolls. Followers that I know and reach out to disagree are one thing. Combative strangers are yet another. You'd think you could just post things and have...

Hello, there! (Star Wars Ep. III: Revenge of the Sith)

Hello! Welcome to my COMM 373 blog. My name is Emma Weinheimer. I am a senior at Mount St. Mary's University, getting my degree in Communication and minoring in math, Spanish, and philosophy. After I graduate, I hope to find a job for a Catholic diocese. I grew up Catholic and I want to help the Church be able to spread what she teaches without changing the message. I was homeschooled through grade school and high school. Some of my interests do coincide with what one might call the "typical homeschooler"-- I'm always game to watch Lord of the Rings and I can halfway-decently swing dance, and I enjoy reading philosophy and old stories. But what I, Emma, truly love to do includes word searches with my little sister, embroidery (great stress reliever, by the way!), learning strange factoids from world history and biology, and watching and connecting movies -- actors, quotes, Easter eggs, score composers. For me, movies are constantly shifting puzzle that I get t...
